To My Afrikan-in-America Comrade

There are power in words
You are not a descendant of slaves
You do not ascend from slavery
You are a descendant of free people who were enslaved
To stop your lineage at the point of disruption is to ignore the continuity of life that persisted through trauma and social death
Your ancestors were royal
Your ancestors were chiefs and providers
Artists and Griots
Some carried forward their memories of their people through the middle passage
They resisted, invented and birthed life in death-like plantations
Just as Afrika’s ‘History’ did not start in 1884
Your blood did not begin to flow in 1619
